Strategies for Winning at Poker
Being predictable is a death sentence, as any good poker player knows. The player who only uses one or two different plays has developed a tell. Other players know what you are going to do and possibly what kind of hand you have by your tells.
It is known that aggressive playing is a key to success. Unfortunately, it is a double-edged sword as playing aggressively often leads to the other players knowing you are bluffing. Raising on a bad hand is an example of aggressive playing.
The aggressive player will force other players to bet on the first two cards and the flop. With the last two cards, the turn and the river, a hand can improve; an aggressive player knows this and uses it to his advantage. He will sacrifice a losing hand in order to fool people into thinking he will always bet so aggressively.
This tactic is also called bluffing which has other characteristics too. The player is actually holding a losing hand so he tries to get the other players to fold. Often successful, this is called a pure-bluff.
A semi-bluff is when a player bets aggressively upon only seeing the hole cards. This is called a semi-bluff because there is a chance that his hand might improve. In any case, if the semi-bluff works and the other players fold, or if they do not fold and the flop improve his hand, the player will win the pot.
When a player checks on a hand until after another player bets, it is called the check-raise play. Once the other players have bet, the deceiver will then raise that bet. His play is to get the other players to think he has a worse hand than he actually does so that he can get them to raise the pot.
The check-raise technique is a double-edged sword. A check-raise gives other players a chance to improve their hand, whereas they would have folded if the check-raiser had just bet at first. It also makes the other players aware that you have a strong hand but that could be an advantage in bluffing.
A steal is a form of bluffing which doesn't move the game past the ante or blind stage. In this strategy, the player will raise at the ante, if there have already been many players who have folded. Because a steal is done right at the ante, it doesn't win the player much money, but it is usually reserved for games where the blind limit increases.
A drawing play is a normal strategy for poker players. Drawing plays are when the player is trying to create a hand from the cards in the window. This usually only works if the other players do not have a made hand, which is an already set hand from the hole and the flop.
When a player raises in order to make the other players fold leaving only one opponent left, he is using the isolation play. A player with few chips is the target of this play by a player with many chips. This is deliberate elimination and may, depending upon the luck of the draw, take a couple of hands.
When used together and consistently, but not in a predictable fashion, will help keep his opponents on their toes. Being eliminated early is a result of having tells or being predictable. Winning the final pot depends on hiding your tells from the other players.
