Digging For Gold In The Data Mine

Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, in fact any internet business built to compete will tell you, data is the coin of the realm. After all, its no secret companies compile masses of data on people, their activities, their likes and dislikes, their relationships with others, and even where they are at any particular moment.
The largest websites have long recognized that information is their greatest treasure. The main reason is because data can be put to use in ways traditional business cannot match.
However, striking it rich in the data mine is where the conversation stops. What right minded mining operation will tell anyone where the claim stake is? But you know you’re getting close when you get “slapped” or actually read Google’s terms of service for example.
I like to pick on Google because there is so much to pick at in the big mines. All those great free apps, storage and mail space with a few AdSense nuggets thrown in to the mix give a user a warm fuzzy feeling all over. One question few ask, and even fewer will answer is, why do we generously give information about ourselves away to companies who turn around and use it to empty our pockets?
All that free stuff is received as “payment” for our golden data. We deliver it freely on their silver plated forms, surveys and other clever ways to get us to supply the gold. Contrary to what you may think, I support and encourage what Google and every data miner does. Now let me explain why I think this is important.
First, by recognizing there is no such thing as privacy in a public domain like the Internet, the thought of characterizing yourself as bits of data in the much larger data stream presents unique opportunities. For example, one effect of free tools and to some extent free access to information like search results and keyword analysis, presents everyone with equal opportunity to stake a larger claim in the data mining business.
Free information can be found. Information you pay for is known. In theory the more you pay the more you can know. However, what underlies free and paid information, is the cost to mine it and the price it can be sold or resold for.
One question that comes to mind is; at what point does a data mining operation become an investment you can make yourself instead of paying others to do it for you?

WordPress Plugin Review
