Securing Your PayPal Email

There is a new type of spam that uses your PayPal email. The bad
news is that no matter what email, web host, or payment processor
you use, it is vulnerable to spoofing. The purpose of spoofing is
to conceal the identity of the sender or impersonate another
computer system like your ISP – or any ISP. In fact, any email
account you set-up can be spoofed.
Here is how I found out about the PayPal spoof. In the fall of
2009, an email spam was sent to my PayPal email address. Two things
made this unusual. First, I only use my PayPal email address for
PayPal transactions – nothing else. Second, the mail was sent by me
to me – the problem being, I did not send it.
What this means is my server was used to impersonate my PayPal
email to send spam to my PayPal email. The spoof was further
complicated by the fact I got the same spam which originated from
another spoofed account – a different domain name I happened to own
on the same shared server.
Could this scenario get any worse? You bet, and here is what
happened next. After a few weeks of getting spam sent to my single
purpose PayPal email, each time from another spoofed sender,
(fortunately not one of my domains), I received an email with a
subject something like “Email Your Offer To Over 40,000 Confirmed
PayPal Buyers”.
Good grief, somehow my email had been stolen from any of the many
ways I use my PayPal email to send or receive money. Phishing is a
general term used to describe the process of unauthorized captures
and uses or abuses of information like your email.
Two hard realities of phishing and spoofing are:
- your email can be phished and used to send spam, and
- the spam you do get, is most likely spoofed and not sent from the
source shown.
When you lose control of your email to phishing or spoofing, the
failure is outside your control. In many cases you don’t even know
it. The problem is not the email. It is how it is used.
The good news is that genuine online transactions are just as
secure as offline transactions because both share the same
databases and security measures. Your PayPal email address only
acts as a point of entry to a much more secure system only you can
access with your password.
Assuming it is safe to use your email to start a secure
transaction, the easiest way of securing your PayPal email for
other uses can be described as a safe fail scenario. It boils down
to what can be done to verify the mail you receive and the mail you
send.
For example, if you already have set up email accounts on your
server, the easiest way to filter spam is to redirect your emails
using a forwarder to a gmail account. Google has the best free mail
manager and spam filter I’ve used so far.
The best spam control I’ve used for my WordPress site is called
wp-recaptcha. It is a free plugin that when combined with another
plugin called recaptcha-form, protects signups, comments, and form
submissions. As for sending email, the best spam filter and
management tools are trusted auto-response services.
There are many more ways for securing your PayPal email and other
mail accounts depending upon your situation. Although, custom
